EconomicsHow to Study Class 12 Economics
By Pranav Golechha, CA · Updated 20 October 2026
Economics is the subject where the student who understands the idea beats the student who memorises the page. The paper tests whether you can apply a concept, read a diagram and explain a change. Here is how I would prepare for it.
Know the paper
Class 12 Economics is a 100-mark subject: 80 marks for theory and 20 for the project and internal assessment. Check the latest sample paper on the CBSE academic website for the current question pattern.
Treat it as two skills
- Reasoning. Most answers follow a chain: this changes, so that changes, so the result is this. Practise saying the chain out loud before you write it. If you cannot explain it in three sentences, you have not understood it yet.
- Numbers and diagrams. Numericals and diagrams are the most predictable marks in the paper. Draw every diagram yourself, label every axis, and mark every shift with an arrow. A neat, correctly labelled diagram is worth more than a paragraph.
Common ways marks are lost
- Drawing the diagram but not explaining the shift in words.
- Mixing up a change in quantity with a change in demand or supply.
- Giving only the formula in a numerical, without steps.
- Writing a general answer on the Indian economy, with no data point, scheme or policy name to support it.
A simple study method
- Read the chapter once for the idea. Do not highlight yet.
- Close the book and explain the idea to yourself in your own words.
- Draw the diagrams from memory and compare.
- Solve the numericals from the textbook first, then from past papers.
- Keep one page of key terms and formulas per chapter for the last month.
The Indian economy chapters
These reward reading beyond the textbook. Read the business page of a good newspaper for fifteen minutes a day. When a question asks you to evaluate a policy, a current example makes your answer stand out.
