Business StudiesHow to Write Business Studies Answers in Class 12
By Pranav Golechha, CA · Updated 20 October 2026
Business Studies looks easy, which is exactly why students lose marks in it. They know the chapter, but they write the answer the way they would explain it to a friend. The examiner is looking for something different.
Know the paper
Class 12 Business Studies is a 100-mark subject: 80 marks for theory and 20 for the project and internal assessment. The theory paper mixes short objective questions with short and long answers and case-based questions. Check the current sample paper on the CBSE academic website so you know the latest pattern.
Write for the examiner, not for yourself
- Answer in points. A long answer should be four or five clear points, each with a heading and one or two lines of explanation.
- Use the textbook's terms. Principles, functions, features and importance have fixed names. Use them exactly, because marking schemes are built around them.
- Add one example. A real example from a business you know shows that you understood the idea, not just memorised it.
- Match the length to the marks. A 3-mark question needs three points. A 6-mark question needs six. Do not write an essay for two marks.
How to handle case-based questions
Read the case twice. Underline the lines that point to a concept. Then name the concept first, in one line, and quote the line from the case that proves it. That single habit separates a full-mark answer from a half-mark answer.
How to study the chapters
Do not read Business Studies like a story. For every chapter, make a one-page sheet: definitions, features, steps, and a one-line example. Revise those sheets, not the whole book, in the last month. Planning, organising, staffing, directing and controlling are linked. Understand how one leads to the next and the whole subject becomes easier.
The project
The 20 internal marks are the easiest marks in the subject. Start your project early, keep it neat, and understand every page of it, because your school may ask you about it.
